Start Time:

Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.
Denchworth, Challow Marsh, West Challow, Childrey and then back to Wantage along the bridleway as the sun sets before dropping back to Grove.

Description:

Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

This may well be a first, a Tuesday 2* ascent of Gramps Hill. After seeing it hyped as an iconic climb in the pre-publicity for the Gravel Cat Adventure Event on YouTube, I thought we should check it out... Short and steep, but at max gradient of 1 in 7 it doesn't warrant an arrow on the OS map, unlike the more familiar icons of White Horse Hill and Blowingstone, or even neighbouring Castle Hill on which we will descend (a great straight on-road descent).

To add to the mix, there are several stretches of non-technical bridleway including the metalled track from West Challow to Childrey, a short stretch along the Ridgeway, the NCN544 track to Lockinge and the rougher track from West Lockinge to Ardington.

Gravel bikes not required but low gears or Shanks pony. We'll take our time on the climb and enjoy the views from the top.

All subject to better weather of course and that the off-road sections have dried out.... If not there are more gentle alternatives.

Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather.

Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Social Family ride of approx 14 miles. This ride is planned for for young riders and their parents/guardians, we are heading out to Stanford in the Vale, and whilst the ride is slightly longer, it is very flat and within the capabilities of those who have been out over the summer. There will be experienced riders on hand to support and deal with any mechanical problems. We will take the ride nice and slowly and stop regularly to ensure everyone is happy. There will be a stop in Stanford for refreshments either, on the green or the cafe.
Please meet at Old Mill Hall Grove at 10.15am to allow time to collect consent forms and check safety. Please check website on the morning of the ride if the weather is poor as it may be cancelled or the start time changed.

Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.

We haven't been to Abingdon or conquered Boars Hill for a while - so this ride puts that right. We take a direct route across to Steventon and through Drayton to Abingdon. We could have an early coffee stop there (venue to be decided) or we could crack on - let's decide on the day. We then head out to the lovely village of Sunningwell and do the one climb of the day up Bayworth Hill to the side of Boars Hill. The reward is some great views down to the dreaming spires of Oxford. The other reward is a stonking descent on the back road off Boars Hill all the way down to Wootton. Then a wiggle over the A420 to Besselsleigh and familiar roads back to Appleton, Hinton Waldrist and Pusey before a final run through Stanford in the Vale (providing an alternative late coffee stop option) and home.

37 miles and one hill - perfect!

Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

Optional sociable stop at The Fox, Denchworth after the ride.

A nice mellow ride this evening, just enough to work up an appetite for the pub. North via Denchworth and Charney Bassett, crossing the A420 on the Southmoor bridge, then a nice meander round the back of Longworth to a beautiful hidden corner with a manor house and a church, well surfaced brldleway to Hinton Waldrist, then back via Pusey, Stanford and Park Lane to the pub.

17 miles to the pub and 20 miles in total. No hills!

Simple loop up through Charney Bassett with a section of track back to Denchworth for the pub stop at The Fox, where the lead ride will terminate.
I have ridden the route and the track section is quite rough and would suit mountain or hybrid bikes best. Gravel bike was fine.
There is an option to get to Denchworth on tarmac and those with skinnier tyres may think this wise.
PLEASE BRING LIGHTS.

Start Time:
7:30 pm
Start Location:
The Mix, Mill Street, Wantage
Description:
We have a long and happy association with the lovely people of Sustainable Wantage, based in The Mix on Mill Street. They have a monthly public event called 'Green Drinks' to discuss various topics of general interest. They have asked us if we could lead the August session and basically provide our local knowledge and advice on how and where to cycle safely in and around Wantage and Grove. We will have some large maps of the area to help us out and I have enlisted the assistance of Guy Wilkins of HarBUG (the Harwell Campus Bicycle User Group) so we can cover commuting questions. Any club members will be welcome to join us.

3* Isle of Wight Special 3* Add to Calendar
Contact:
Katherine Boyce - 07817 727563
Start Time:
8:00 am
Start Location:
Lymington Pier
Description:
Based on the ride that John Talbot did for many years, this uses what I think was the nicest of the rides he did. Although this is just over a 100km riding with just shy of 1400m of climbing, done at the right pace, this is a very accessible ride that takes in the best of the Isle of Wight. Glorious views, swooping hills and a ferry ride at Cowes (1 pound), what more could you ask for .

IMPORTANT UPDATE 4 AUGUST 2019: We are now putting on 2 groups. Jenny Gower is going to lead the 08:40 group and I will lead the 07:40 group. Please text me if you want to do the early ferry, currently numbers for each ferry are evenly split. If too many want to do one or other of the ferries, I may need to just allocate people. Unless I hear otherwise by the 24 August, the default ferry for those that have told me they are coming and not expressed a preference will be the 08:40. Please DO NOT just turn up for this ride, it is important we know who is going and with which leader, if you have not already let me know you are coming, please do so without delay.

We will catch the 07:40 or 08:40 ferry from Lymington Pier (SO41 5SB). We will travel as day return foot passengers (17pounds for adults and 12.70pounds for 60+, tickets can be bought online in advance or at the ticket office before sailing. Alternatively if there are 10 or more of us we can buy a group ticket at 15pounds per person), bikes are carried free of charge. The crossing takes 40 minutes. There is a pay and display car park at the ferry terminal (8pounds for 2-16hrs). Bring enough change for the machines or alternatively you can use Ringgo to pay for your ticket, see here http://www.wightlink.co.uk/go/isle-of-wight-ferry-routes-destinations/lymington-yarmouth-ferry/.

You must arrive at least 30mins before the ferry to allow time for parking, buying tickets and boarding. Boarding commences 15 minutes before sailing. We will car share as much as possible.

There is limited food on the ferry (tea, coffee, cakes, toast) but there is a cafe at the ferry terminal if you want to arrive early enough to grab some breakfast!

We'll stop at the Old World Tea Rooms in Godshill for a late morning cuppa/comfort break. Lunch stop will be at the Toll Gate Cafe next to the harbour in Bembridge. We'll aim to stop for an afternoon tea/ice cream and comfort break at Cowes dependant on the time. Return ferry will either be the 16:05, 17:05 or 18:05 from Yarmouth.

I've provided last years route below, this may change in the coming months.
