Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.
Tonight we will go out via Denchworth, and on to Charney Bassett and Gainfield, before arriving at Stanford in the Vale. We return via Park Lane & Asti Stud. Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. Slightly longer ride at about 14 miles. Lights recommended if stop at the pub.

Description:
Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather.

Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride.

Description:
Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

A change of direction this week as we head North to Appleton. A slightly longer (23 miles) but largely flat route. Out via Lyford and Southmoor, we'll stop for a rest by the picturesque village pond in Appleton. On our return we'll take a little used cut-through to avoid the A420 roundabout before joining the A338 for about a mile to Tubney. Then back via Fyfield and Charney Bassett.
There will be an optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. Please bring lights if planning to cycle home after the pub stop.

Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.

Fairly flat ride tonight as the pub beckons! Out to Baulking via Goosey and then bypassing Uffington to Fernham, over the A417 to Hatford then on to Hinton Waldrist. We'll return over the A420 via the bridge to Kingston Bagpuize. The ride will finish at Denchworth at the Fox, but if you are not stopping you are unlikely to be returning to Grove on your own!

Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride.

Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph).
HILLY - GEAR, CLOTHE & FUEL accordingly for ~700m vertical please.

This is a LONG/TOUGH ride - LIGHTS required, in case of mechanicals etc.
Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride.

Heading South of the M4 tonight & "down to the river (Pang) we'd ride" as Mr Springsteen sang. Weather permitting, tonight will see us head off up the 4 pitches of Chain Hill, regrouping as necessary at the very top (Lockinge Kiln Farm driveway). From there via the short sharp Ilsley climbs to Compton's formidable Applepie Hill(sweat). Relief follows in a fast & exciting descent, taking a careful right at The Four Points, dropping past the tropical jungles of Wyld Ct. Farm towards Hampstead Norreys. A sharp left here onto deliciously narrow gravelly lanes alongside the Pang for a good while (banana time (mm)) until we break West to begin climbing again towards Hermitage and thence Chieveley. But, on recrossing the M4, Chieveley is denied by a quick right to Worlds' End (hat tip to REM) prior to reaching Stanmore. It's verdant leafy lanes to Lilley before picking up the B4494 and the plunge off Chain Hill, dropping like basses in to Wantage approaching sunset. The led ride will END at the base of Chain Hill at approx 9pm.
For those with energy, time, funds and a raging thirst, Tales of the Big Chainring can be recounted over a Foxy beer in Denchworth (beer) - probably best decided on the night.

3* Lite Ride 3* Add to Calendar

Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
Description:
This is the second in this season's series. The purpose of the 3* lite rides is to give confident 2* riders the chance to try out a 3* ride ride at the lower end of the 3* riding pace. There will be opportunities to experience riding at a faster pace on the flat and to attempt some hills. The atmosphere will be supportive and encouraging and there will be the opportunity to stop for a coffee and a natter at the end.
All welcome.

Today we'll ride a route similar to a 3* Tuesday evening ride that Andy P led a few weeks ago. It's only 40km but there's 490m of climbing, so plenty of opportunities to practise those hills! We will be taking them at a steady pace and stopping at the top.
We ascend the Ridgeway via Court Hill, then wend our way through some pretty West Berkshire villages to climb back up the escarpment before the lovely descent of Chain Hill. Then it's into The Bay Tree Cafe for those who'd like to.

1* away day - The Oxford Special Series 1* Add to Calendar
Contact:
John Tranter - 07836 238350
Start Time:
2:00 pm
Start Location:
Botley shopping centre at the bottom of Cumnor Hil
Description:
A very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside and canalside paths and quiet streets to do a 17 mile 'urban safari' around Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is almost entirely traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Meet in the car park behind the shops at the bottom of Cumnor Hill. Parking here is free for 3 hours, which will be ample. We use the lovely track from North Hinksey to get to Osney Mead, then up the river, across Port Meadow to the canal, up to Wolvercote and then through the exclusive back streets of leafy Summertown until we get to the Marston Ferry Road. Then there is a fascinating series of hidden tracks and roads through to the Brooks campus (including an unexpected manor house), then a swoop down to Florence Park and a final section of beautiful riverside towpath. Some of the tracks will be rough in places, so this is not the ride for carbon super bikes. Mountain bikes would actually work as well as hybrids for this.

Free parking in Botley and the chance of a fine coffee stop at Taylor's to finish with. Really interesting - don't miss it!

17 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph.

Description:
Off-road ride on the Ridgeway and the Downs. Lots of beautiful scenery, enough climbing and descending to make it interesting but no major technical challenges and we will take this at a moderate pace equivalent to a 2* road ride.

Tea and cake stop at Court Hill after most of the ride (or you could make this your lunch) .

The route attached is 23 miles, but I will ask on the day and we can choose shorter or longer versions.

Watership Down Reversed 3* Add to Calendar
Contact:
Nick Stokell - [javascript protected email address]
Start Time:
9:00 am
Start Location:
Woolton Hill nr Newbury - see details below
Description:
Meet at The Chase National Trust Car Park (free), off Station Road, Woolton Hill. From the A34: Follow this route or directions below:
Driving south past Newbury on the A34, leave at the A343 junction signed 'Highclere, Wash Common'.
Turn left at the roundabout signed 'Newbury, Wash Common'.
Then 2nd left, signed 'Enborne Row, East Woodhay, Ball Hall' and also for The Furze Bush Inn and The Yew Tree Garden Centre.
On crossing under the A34, take the first left into Station Road. The car park is a short way down on the left-hand side.

97.5 km Hilly (1300 m) ride based on the Watership Down Audax route but in the reversed (i.e. anti-clockwise direction), and replacing the straight (& rather busy) A272 towards Winchester with a meander along the Test Valley.

Proposed route is shown below but may get tweaked to squeeze 3 figures out of it! It's a beautiful scenic route on quiet country lanes. Most of the climbs are early on, most significantly Walbury Hill.

Refreshment stops (probably two in number) not yet finalised (but may include Leckford Estate Café;), but I would like anyone planning to come along to let me know as soon as you can and by 7 June as this will allow me to finalise the stops.

More details to follow.
