2* Saturday Afternoon Ride 2* Add to Calendar

Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

An old classic on some rarely used little roads down into the Thames Valley. Out via Denchworth and Park Lane to Stanford in the Vale, then to Hatford and a tiny road to the north. Then a quick dash down a short section of the A420 to Littleworth is rewarded by a dramatic drop into the Thames flood plain. Over the river to Clanfield, along to Bampton and a great tea stop at Aston Pottery. Pot buying is optional, but the cafe is great. Suitably fortified, we will take some time to explore the rarely travelled tiny lanes around Shifford and Chimney (tantalisingly close to the other side of Duxford ford), before conquering the modest challenge of Buckland Hill and (after exploring the back streets of Buckland village) heading for home via Charney Bassett.

37 miles of mellow wonderment!

Description:
Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.
Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride.
This is a bridging ride at the upper level of the range to allow riders to gauge their pace and gain confidence to step up to the next star level. So, with that in mind, tonight we'll tackle Holborn Hill.
We ride from Grove to Wantage and after a very short section on the B4507, we'll quickly turn off onto quieter lanes that take us through Letcombe Regis and Letcombe Bassett. We'll then climb the hill, steep but quite short, before a rewarding descent into Childrey. Then it's back along familiar roads with a very short stretch on the A417, through Goosey to Denchworth and the pub for those who'd like to stop.

Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather.

Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride.

Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride.

This is a bridging ride at the upper level of the range to allow riders to gauge their pace and gain confidence to step up to the next star level.

Just tweaking the hill count a little after last week - this time we go out through the Letcombes to Holborn Hill and then the more significant challenge of Hackpen Hill. Once we have enjoyed the views from the top, we will also enjoy the swooping descent to the south before switching back on the Seven Barrows road for a gentle run back up to the Ridgeway. A big drop down Blowingstone Hill is followed by the exhilarating technical descent of Kingston Lisle Hill. Then back through Goosey to the pub at Denchworth and/or back to Grove.

20 miles to the pub, 2 more to Grove. A good steady 12mph pace.

Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. This is a bridging ride at the upper level of the range to allow riders to gauge their pace and gain confidence to step up to the next star level.

For those who missed out on the chance to climb Chain Hill, due to rain a couple of weeks ago, here is your chance to relive a Wantage classic! (Thats 525m climbing in 44.6 km).

We'll be climbing Chain Hill and down to West Ilsley. From there we'll head over to Catmore, up past Brightwalton and Woolley to the A338 climb to the Ridgeway. From there we'll head down to the Letcombes and back up Windmill Hill to East Challow. The hard work behind us, we head back to Denchworth for a well earned pub stop (for those of that persuasion!).

Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride.

Description:
Weekly, 2 hour ride at a riding pace of 27-29km/h (17-18mph). May be hilly, but this one isn't. However, we will get a tickle-on to make sure we're in good time (20:30 target) for Beer (beer).

Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the END of the ride.
Lights are now sensible, whether stopping or not.

This is a bridging ride at the upper level of the range to allow riders to gauge their pace and gain confidence to step up to the next star level, or indeed the bar!

A recent predilection for heading South (and upwards) is complimented by a Northerly tour of historically troubled lands* where apparently a disorderly alehouse in Aston was suppressed at the inhabitants' request in 1700. In the 16th century inhabitants laying out a meadow in Aston were entitled to bread and a gallon of ale from those with rights there, and "complex meadow customs" (giggle) persisted until inclosure. Nearby, contaminated wells in Cote may have caused a diphtheria epidemic in 1893, leading to a return to Alehouses as a more reliable source of wholesome liquid refreshment ;-).

For those expecting a musical reference I can merely refer you to a topical massacre of one of Bizet's best known tunes.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imgxOmW6VZ0

Cheers !

3* Lite 3* Add to Calendar

Karen Townsin - [javascript protected email address]
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
This is the third in this season's series. The purpose of the 3* lite rides is to give confident 2* riders the chance to try out a 3* ride ride at the lower end of the 3* riding pace. There will be opportunities to experience riding at a faster pace on the flat and to attempt some hills. The atmosphere will be supportive and encouraging and there will be the opportunity to stop for a coffee and a natter at the end.
All welcome.

It's time to conquer Chain Hill as part of a pretty lumpy excursion into the West Berkshire Downs. There is lots of climbing, but that means lots of descending too.
The route is 41km with over 500m of climbing, but we'll take all the hills at a steady pace and wait at the top for as long as we need. We have all morning, so there's absolutely no pressure. You know that if you hate hills, the only way to get better is to tackle them!!

Description:
Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.

Shortened version of the Sunday ride I led in January, this time crossing the River Pang at Stanford Dingley. Quite a bit of climbing but the worst of this will be over early after the grind up Chain Hill. The reward comes in the form of the quiet lanes and views that follow. No stops until Hillers at Hermitage at 45 km so bring some snacks. Estimated return time 1730.
