Oxford Urban Safari 1* Add to Calendar
Contact:
John Tranter - 07836 238350
Start Time:
2:00 pm
Start Location:
Redbridge Park and Ride, Oxford, OX1 4XG
Description:
Brand new for 2019, this is a very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside paths and quiet streets to do a 13 mile 'urban safari' around the south and centre of Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is mostly traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Parking is in the Redbridge Park and Ride at the southern end of the Abingdon Road (bring 2 pounds in coins). Note there is a height restriction on the entrance so let me know in advance if you have bikes on a roof rack for further instructions.

We head north through the strange sliver of a suburb known as Grandpont, cross the river on the fascinating Gasworks bridge and then head into the centre of town. A mini-tour of Jericho before a VIP coffee stop at St Cross College on St Giles (you only get in if you are friends with the Bursar!). Then I will give you the insider gossip as we pass through the epicentre of Oxford, under Hertford College's Bridge of Sighs, and eventually down to the river at Folly Bridge where we head along the towpath past the College boathouses, pop up into the lovely Iffley village and Rose Hill before continuing along the river to Sandford. We then have a couple of miles back through Kennington before some unexpected underpasses get us back to the start.

I'm really pleased with this one - don't miss it!

13 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph.

Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.

D-Day 75 Normandy Tour 3* Add to Calendar
Contact:
Richard Pethybridge - [javascript protected email address]
Start Time:
7:00 pm
Start Location:
Whale Island, Portsmouth
Description:
This year's Normandy ride is going to be a little different! 2019 is the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings of 1944 and so the weekend is going to be spent exploring the area along Gold, Juno, Sword and Omaha beaches, staying overnight in Bayeux and finishing off on Sunday with visits to Pegasus Bridge and The Merville Battery. The idea will be to visit a number of key D-Day sites, at which yours truly will give a quick description of why that place was important and the role it played in the landings. The group will travel from Portsmouth to Ouistreham on Friday evening, before returning from France on the Sunday afternoon ferry. The outbound sailing is at 2245 from Portsmouth to Caen with Brittany Ferries. The plan will be to rendezvous at the RN base at Whale Island (full details to be provided in due course) earlier in the evening before enjoying a pub meal in advance of embarkation.
Some other admin points:
1. All riders will need to have comprehensive personal travel insurance before they can come on the ride. That cover must include cycling in a foreign country. Remember - your EHIC will (almost certainly) no longer be valid when we travel, and even if it is it doesn't cover being repatriated in the event of injury.
2. Check your passport for validity. Assuming Brexit has happened there are specific rules about how much time you need to have remaining on its dates and you will be refused embarkation if your passport does not meet the requirements. The rules are complicated, so I recommend using the government's checking tool here: https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/check-a-passport
3. Numbers are going to be limited to 14. Anyone wishing to come with us should email me to let me know. Everyone is responsible for making their own ferry and hotel bookings.

Full details of each day's ride are included in the next listings for the days in question, but if you want any further information please email me on pethybridgera@yahoo.co.uk or call on 07875 456521.

D-Day 75 Tour Day 1 3* Add to Calendar
Contact:
Richard Pethybridge - [javascript protected email address]
Start Time:
9:00 am
Start Location:
Ouistreham, France
Description:
The ferry arrives in Ouistreham at 0645, which is early enough for the sun still to be below the horizon, so lights are essential. We will take breakfast on the ferry before disembarkation, as we will need to get going once we are off the boat.
The route heads what along the coast, starting along Sword Beach, before passing Juno and Gold and finishing up at Omaha. Along the way we will pause at Arromanches, the gun battery at Longues-sur-Mer, Port-en-Bessin (for coffee), and the US cemetery at Colleville (think Saving Private Ryan). We will then dip inland a bit en route to Pointe du Hoc, and then aim for lunch in Grandcamp-Maisy. After lunch we will head inland to the German cemetery at La Cambe, before heading east again through the Bocage country to our hotel in Bayeux. The recommended hotel is La Campanile. It is a chain type of hotel not dissimilar to a Travel Lodge. No frills but well priced - I have stayed there many times and the breakfast is good. We will aim to take a stroll into Bayeux itself for an evening meal together.

Total distance is 68 miles, with 2250ft of climbing. For Normandy trip veterans that is about 10 miles less than St Malo to Vire, and about 600ft less climbing.

D-Day 75 Tour Day 2 3* Add to Calendar
Contact:
Richard Pethybridge - 07789 228361
Start Time:
9:00 am
Start Location:
Bayeux, France
Description:
After breakfast we will depart eastwards from Bayeux, once again enjoying the Normandy 'Bocage' countryside. We will visit the Hillman Bunker site near Colleville-Montgomery (guess who they renamed their village in honour of...) before crossing the Caen Canal at Pegasus Bridge. After a brief stop at the Ranville CWGC cemetery we will loop around via the Merville Battery site back to Pegasus Bridge and then the final run along the canal to Ouistreham.

Total distance is 41 miles and 1300ft of climbing, once again 10 miles and about 500ft less climbing than previous years. This will allow a more leisurely start. I have yet to decide exactly where we will take lunch, so the route may change slightly depending on opportunities. The ferry departs at 1630 so we will aim to be at the terminal in plenty of time at about 1500.
